SOUTHEAST CATHOLIC

BISHOP NEUMANN

Thursday, March 8, 1956, marked a dramatic change
for the alumni association.
The Millay Club would now be subtitled the
Southeast Catholic-Bishop Neumann High School
Alumni Association.
These Bishop Neumann years would be characterized
by growth in the numbers of alumni members
and their activities. In 1958, the first Career Conference was held.
Its purpose was to acquaint the students with the variety
of occupations available and with graduates of
Southeast Catholic-Bishop Neumann High School.
Also in 1958, The Millay Club became an annual
$500 donor to the Catholic Charities Appeal
for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.
Each year since 1961, the alumni have made
financial contributions to the construction of
Our Lady of Daylesford Abbey in Paoli, Pennsylvania.
At the 1964 Communion Breakfast, two close friends of the
Millay Club were made honorary members of the alumni.
Rev. George J. Feider, O.Praem., and
Mr. Paul J. Bartolomeo received this
recognition as
"longtime friends and benefactors of The Millay Club."
By the end of thedecade, The Millay Club
created another award to honor its outstanding members.
The Abbot Pennings Award was designed to recognize
the alumnus who was "the epitome of a Catholic Gentleman."
This award is still presented at he annual Communion Breakfast.
In 1977, The Millay Club was saddened by the death of
Rev. Anthony W. Polini, O.Praem.,'42.
Father Polini had served as a teacher and principal
of Bishop Neumann High School before his promotion
to Assistant Superintendent of Schools
for the Philadelphia Archdiocese.
In his memory, the
Fr. Polini Memorial Scholarship Fund
was established to assist students who wished
to attend Neumann but could not afford the expense.
Over $100,000 dollars has been contributed to the fund
since its inception. In addition, The Millay Club
established the Fr. Polini Award.
The award recognizes a person's untiring efforts and
outstanding contributions on behalf of Catholic Education.
